#3 - Pours and Flip Cups Technique

Pours and Flip Cups:

The basic idea here is that you choose your colours, then layer them or otherwise add them all into one or more cups - think of a Dixie cup or a Red Solo cup.
Once that is done, you either:
invert or "flip" or "dump"the cup onto the canvas,
or pour the paint out onto the canvas. Sometimes you will pour in rings, or other patterns. Other times you might pour randomly.

Once the paint is on the canvas you manipulate it by tilting and dumping a lot of the paint off of the canvas. It sounds counter-intuitive but therein lies the art of it.

Paintings using these methods can be quite different, and are possibly the least controllable of all the methods I use.  When teaching this method, I find the best explanation is an analogy to life. You have an idea, you make a plan, you choose the colours, mix the paint, measure it out, design the way the paint in the cup is to be layered, and then you hope for the best. It is a good reminder you aren't quite as in control of things as you might think :)

Here are some examples. They are quite different but typically they cover the entire canvas, and may or may not have cells.

And sometimes the canvas screams. Abstract art is great because each person may see different things. But in the case there is no subtlety, and the canvas was not impressed, lol!
This was my first galaxy ring pour, and I'm still not terribly proficient in getting nice round rings. I really didn't "see" this until it had dried!  (you see it, right?)
