#1 - The Dutch Pour Technique
Technique #1: The Dutch Pour
The technique known as the Dutch Pour is named after Rinske Douna, the woman who, as far as i know, pretty much invented the method. I tend to refer to them as "blow outs" since my main tool is a hair dryer. This is one of my favourite techniques. The basic concept is to cover a canvas with one or more colours of paint as a base layer, then strategically place more paint on top of the base and manipulate it, or blow it over top of the base, to create the images you see below. It is preferable not to blast paint all over the place, particularly off the canvas, if at all possible.
In some cases I intentionally create them with lots of lacing or cells, as in Untitled or Yankee 1. In others I try to avoid cells, such as in Autumn Breeze, Watery and Orange Flower.
In Fire & Ice 1, I included cells, and then further embellished the work by swiping another thin layer of black over the base and the colours to create the lacy effect.
At some point I'll make a video of me creating a Dutch Pour. If you are curious, my favourite expert at this technique with a YouTube channel is Kanella Ciraco Art, who is also from Ontario.
